As "True Detective" is an anthology series with completely different stories and characters each season, I don't think it's fair to lump all of the seasons together, so let's just talk about Season 1 here.
If you ever had any doubts about the acting chops of Matthew McConaughey, these 8 episodes will change your mind. He's absolutely brilliant in this dark story of ritual murder and the even darker lives of the men who investigate such crimes.
Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan deliver good performances as well, but they are overshadowed by McCoaughey.
Even better than the acting are the writing, directing, and cinematography. The story is gripping and thought-provoking and the director and cinematographer immerse you into this seedy world from which you cannot seem to escape... and you don't want to. It's a nearly 8-hour binge that will leave you wanting more. It's note-perfect in every sense.

Yep
Even Woody keeps giving you more reasons to suspect he's a pretty good actor.

But then he goes and does Star Wars and fucks it all up
