Global oil-and-gas giants including Exxon Mobil (XOM.N), Chevron (CVX.N) and Equinor (EQNR.OL) posted huge profits in the third quarter, benefiting from surging energy costs that have boosted inflation around the world and hit consumers hard.



Oil companies booked billions of dollars in profits as prices for crude, natural gas and fuels like gasoline hovered near record levels during the quarter. Global supplies remain tight due to output cuts stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, and market disruption following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

The soaring profits are feeding criticism from consumer groups in the United States and Europe as inflation climbs. U.S. President Joe Biden has told oil companies they are not doing more to bring down energy costs, while in Britain and the European Union, there are calls for further windfall taxes on energy companies.

Exxon Mobil, the largest U.S. major, reported nearly $20 billion in revenue, exceeding expectations and surpassing its previous record set in the second quarter.

Exxon, which led record gains by the five producers known as oil majors in the prior quarter, far surpassed peers Shell (SHEL.L) and TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) with third-quarter profit almost twice as big. Its gains were aided by its highly criticized decision to double down on fossil fuels as European competitors shifted to renewable investments.



Chevron earned $11.2 billion, nearly doubling the $6.1 billion from the same period last year. U.S. oil executives have been loath to crow about this year's earnings gains, preferring to emphasize investment commitments.

U.S. lawmakers have criticized the big oil companies for not doing more to raise production more swiftly to offset rising costs for consumers for heating homes and filling the gas tank. Chevron's global production of 3.1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed) for all of 2022 so far is actually down by about 100,000 boed from the same time a year ago.



European governments have scrambled to fill gas storage after Russia cut off most of its natural gas exports to the continent, its primary customer.



On Friday, Norway's Equinor posted a record-breaking profit, driven by the all-time high in European gas prices, and Italy's Eni (ENI.MI) nearly tripled its profit from a year ago, earning 3.73 billion euros ($3.72 billion), ahead of consensus.



"The Russian war in Ukraine has changed the energy markets, reduced energy availability and increased prices," Equinor Chief Executive Anders Opedal said in a statement.



The strong results out of Europe followed Shell's $9.5 billion profit reported Thursday, putting it on track to surpass its record set in 2008.

Businesses are not in business to break even, merh. Unlike Govt, they can't keep going if they take massive losses. Where'd all that money for for your high speed train? Record profits? or just more Govt waste?

What this report finds: Corporate boards running America’s largest public firms are giving top executives outsize compensation packages that have grown much faster than the stock market and the pay of typical workers, college graduates, and even the top 0.1%. In 2021, we project that a CEO at one of the top 350 firms in the U.S. was paid $27.8 million on average (using a “realized” measure of CEO pay that counts stock awards when vested and stock options when cashed in and ownership is taken). This 11.1% increase from 2020 occurred because of rapid growth in vested stock awards. Using a different “granted” measure of CEO pay (which counts the value of stock awards and options when announced (or “granted” rather than realized), average top CEO compensation was $15.6 million in 2021, up 9.8% since 2020. In 2021, the ratio of CEO-to-typical-worker compensation was 399-to-1 under the realized measure of CEO pay; that is up from 366-to-1 in 2020 and a big increase from 20-to-1 in 1965 and 59-to-1 in 1989. CEOs are even making a lot more than other very high earners (wage earners in the top 0.1%)—almost seven times as much. From 1978 to 2021, CEO pay based on realized compensation grew by 1,460%, far outstripping S&P stock market growth (1,063%) and top 0.1% earnings growth (which was 385% between 1978 and 2020, according to the latest data available). In contrast, compensation of the typical worker grew by just 18.1% from 1978 to 2021.

Why it matters: Exorbitant CEO pay is a contributor to rising inequality that we could restrain without doing any damage to the wider economy. CEOs are getting ever-higher pay over time because of their power to set pay and because so much of their pay (more than 80%) is stock-related. They are not getting higher pay because they are becoming more productive or more skilled than other workers, or because of a shortage of excellent CEO candidates. This escalation of CEO compensation and of executive compensation more generally has fueled the growth of top 1% and top 0.1% incomes, leaving fewer of the gains of economic growth for ordinary workers and widening the gap between very high earners and the bottom 90%. The economy would suffer no harm if CEOs were paid less (or were taxed more).

How we can solve the problem: We need to enact policy solutions that would both reduce incentives for CEOs to extract economic concessions and limit their ability to do so. Such policies could include reinstating higher marginal income tax rates at the very top; setting corporate tax rates higher for firms that have higher ratios of CEO-to-worker compensation; using antitrust enforcement and regulation to restrain the excessive market power of firms—and by extension of CEOs; and allowing greater use of “say on pay,” which allows a firm’s shareholders to vote on top executives’ compensation.

Canadians are resorting to desperate measures as they struggle to deal with the rising cost of food and inflation.

According to a Nanos Research survey commissioned by CTV News, nearly 60% of Canadians said they switched to less expensive brands in the last month to cope with the situation.

Another 25% said they were stockpiling food, while 17% resorted to cutting out meals altogether because groceries were too expensive.

The survey found that young Canadians were the most impacted with over 70% of people between the age of 18 and 34 saying they are purchasing cheaper food items.

The price of some of the most popular branded food items has jumped in just two years, new research suggests, putting further strain on shoppers.
Heinz Tomato Ketchup saw the biggest average percentage increase, with its 460g top-down version up by 53% or 91p, according to Which?
It also found that Dolmio Lasagne Sauce (470g) saw the second-biggest jump, up 61p in two years.
Its survey compared prices of 79 items across six major supermarkets.
The consumer group's findings suggest that the price of some of Britain's favourite branded products might be rising more quickly than the overall cost of living, which is going up at its fastest rate in 40 years.
Inflation, which measures how the cost of living changes over time, currently stands at 10.1%.
Which? analysed the cost of branded food items available in Asda, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose over a 30-day period from 21 September to 20 October in both 2020 and 2022.
