(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks extended a rebound on Monday as a whipsaw in energy prices relieved some pressure on the market.


The S&P 500 added 0.2% and the Nasdaq 100 gained 0.5% in a continuation of last week’s gains when solid corporate earnings and economic reports were enough to outweigh concerns about energy shortages and supply-chain disruptions.

Earlier on Monday OPEC+ failed to meet output targets and Russia opted against sending more natural gas to Europe, sending commodity prices higher. However, oil’s decline from a session high eased some fears of inflation and policy tightening. The S&P 500 has now pared back losses from an all-time high to about 1.2%.

“The issues that caused the pullback have quieted over the past two weeks, which has rightly allowed stocks to bounce,” wrote Tom Essaye, a former Merrill Lynch trader who founded “The Sevens Report” newsletter. “But these issues are not resolved by any stretch of the imagination.”

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note climbed to 1.59% while U.K. yields surged after the Bank of England warned on the need to respond to price pressures. Rate-hike bets have now also picked up in Australia and New Zealand, where inflation accelerated to the fastest pace in 10 years. The dollar was little changed.

“Rising commodity prices -- particularly oil prices, which only appear to go in one direction at the moment -- are boosting expectations of high inflation becoming more entrenched and a sooner move by the Fed to raise interest rates,” said Fiona Cincotta, senior financial markets analyst at City Index.

However, there are fears the central bank will not be nimble enough to respond to a potential miscalculation.

“That’s where we could end up with recessionary risks down the line,” Michael Darda, chief economist and market strategist at MKM Holdings, said. “That’s not going to be a risk for next year in my estimation, but this could prove to be a shorter business cycle.”

Speakers from the Federal Reserve this week are expected to try to calm investors about future tightening ahead of plans to begin tapering asset purchases. Additionally, another week of corporate earnings will give investors insight into companies’ resilience and strength.

“Last week a glance under the hood of how things are going was provided when five of America’s biggest banks reported results with enough positive surprises among them to counter concerns that had jostled stocks ahead of their reporting,” John Stoltzfus, chief investment strategist at Oppenheimer, wrote to clients. “As investors navigate the current landscape, it’s important to keep things in context and right size one’s expectations as markets and asset classes reflect progress as well as set-backs that are the norm whenever economies and markets are exiting a major crisis be it financial or pandemic.”

Basically it all comes down to the 24 hour news cycle.

I remember watching Fox as it was breaking & it became obvious they had nothing new, but didn't want to leave the story in case something broke so they just kept showing the school & running every wild speculation they heard. Remember the cops were looking for a second shooter? Now it seems they're always looking for that second shooter.

You can't admit or see that there is definitely a bias in our media? FOX has always been clearly rightwing.........and the rest have more and more exposed themselves as the opposite.

Sorta like how the soldiers dead was a Bush thing and then it kinda just disappeared after the 2008 election? 

You live in a densely populated area with a lot of traffic in the air and on the ground. They could go all day, every day with death stories if they liked. It's all about what they choose to focus on........ just like we do with our politics.

Just nine months into office, President Biden has inspired a chart-topping hit, although don’t expect him to add it to his playlist.

The anti-Biden anthem “Lets Go Brandon” by New Jersey rapper Loza Alexander was locked Tuesday at No. 1 on the Apple iTunes list of Top Rap and Hip-Hop Songs a week after its release Oct. 12.

In addition, “Lets Go Brandon” was the No. 2 U.S. song overall Tuesday on the iTunes chart, trailing only Adele’s “Easy On Me,” while the music video had been viewed nearly 1.7 million times on Mr. Alexander’s YouTube channel.

Not bad for a tune that started as a viral meme. The phrase became a rallying cry on the right after NBC NASCAR reporter Kelli Stavast said on the air Oct. 2 that a crowd yelling “f—- Joe Biden” was actually chanting “Let’s go, Brandon,” referring to winning driver Brandon Brown.

In a Monday video post, Mr. Alexander said he and his family celebrated after the video reached 1 million views Sunday, adding that he was “speechless” by the song’s success.

“My first 1 million view video. ‘Lets Go Brandon.’ It just happened,” he said. “Thank you, guys, so much for supporting it. Thank you, guys, for the love. This is the biggest record in the country right now.”

He also thanked Fox News, which featured the song on-air last week, and conservative YouTube host Steven Crowder and Donald Trump Jr. for promoting the tune on social media.

How modern of them to come to the realization that work, for the most part, sucks for most people.    How did they reach adulthood not realizing that?

The old joke I always heard was that our of a dozen kids, at least one would become something worthy like a doctor even if a couple died or became criminals. 
The idea one had spare kids.
And they were your retirement. They would take care if you in your old age.

My understanding was it was more rural in the past, you'd be lucky if all your kids survived past 10......thus you had more, just in case.

Just nine months into office, President Biden has inspired a chart-topping hit, although don’t expect him to add it to his playlist.

The anti-Biden anthem “Lets Go Brandon” by New Jersey rapper Loza Alexander was locked Tuesday at No. 1 on the Apple iTunes list of Top Rap and Hip-Hop Songs a week after its release Oct. 12.

In addition, “Lets Go Brandon” was the No. 2 U.S. song overall Tuesday on the iTunes chart, trailing only Adele’s “Easy On Me,” while the music video had been viewed nearly 1.7 million times on Mr. Alexander’s YouTube channel.

Not bad for a tune that started as a viral meme. The phrase became a rallying cry on the right after NBC NASCAR reporter Kelli Stavast said on the air Oct. 2 that a crowd yelling “f—- Joe Biden” was actually chanting “Let’s go, Brandon,” referring to winning driver Brandon Brown.

In a Monday video post, Mr. Alexander said he and his family celebrated after the video reached 1 million views Sunday, adding that he was “speechless” by the song’s success.

“My first 1 million view video. ‘Lets Go Brandon.’ It just happened,” he said. “Thank you, guys, so much for supporting it. Thank you, guys, for the love. This is the biggest record in the country right now.”

He also thanked Fox News, which featured the song on-air last week, and conservative YouTube host Steven Crowder and Donald Trump Jr. for promoting the tune on social media.
