I know WHY it works.
Just wondering how much others have seen or noticed it on Youtube? Usually, aside from a few Ads, you get what is advertised
I didn't say you didn't know. I just pointed out that it has existed - in one form or another - long before YouTube or other contemporary forms of media. And to be honest, I don't think I've ever noticed a single thumb nail...
now that IS interesting to me.
I've recently started to skip directly clicking ON videos because of too many ads for starters........and 'hovering' over them to get a sneak peek of the content. You can even click along the timeline to advance the video to see if the content is what you're wanting to waste your time on. One fella, Scotty Kilmer the auto pro, has the same opening scene and graphics for the first bit, so I'd rather just skip ahead past all that, endure the 5 second Ad, and pick up in the video where I've snuck ahead to. It's keep track and place you on that spot time-wise when you do decide to click into the full screen video.
Is your Search/Page showing up differently than mine?

On my laptop, I have add block activated, so I never encounter adds on YouTube... or on many other sites either. On my PS4, I sit too far away from the TV to really notice small thumbnails... although we may be talking about different things. You might have to define "thumbnail". And on my PS4, I flick in and out of the adds very quickly, until the video itself starts. I'd sooner spend a couple of minutes doing that than being forced to watch a single add.

I only use a PC, so even that may be different........ when I go to Youtube........ it's a generic page with their logo in the upper left corner and a Search bar across the upper middle
Below that..........they started just having an ever expanding list of suggested videos.........with 4 thumbnails/small window photos with a title to catch your attention.
There's 2 rows of those.........then a row of TikTok Shorts (I think/guess that's the source)
and then below that it's the ever expanding page with more and more rows of 4 to consider

Your setup sounds more or less the same as mine... The only difference is you consider the small window pics to be thumbnails, whereas I consider the small circular pics under them to be thumbnails. Although technically, I suppose both of them are. However, I still don't often take much notice of the pic, just the title.

For me, I suppose it's the thumbnail that might attract me for one reason and the title for another. That said, if one or the other fails when watching the content, I'll probably never watch another video by that creator... as long as I can recall their name.
Food recipe thumbnails catch my eye, while, for other content (all of Simon's channels etc.), it's usually the title.

This is now my very favorite go-to video when I need a kitten fix! What a good mama kitty! We need a heart emoji!
