The internet is an amazing place. If you look hard enough, you can find all sorts of bullshit upon which to hang your hat.
In a time of pandemic, there are always going to be people spreading lies. Sadly - even with tons of factual information available to them - some people seem to studiously avoid anything that might put a giant hole in their conspiracy theory.
I recently saw some joker in a comment section of a news article state that you had more chance of drowning in your backyard swimming pool than dying of Covid, to which some other moron chimed in that motor vehicle accidents were even more deadly.
Because I'm not stupid, I decided to look up the numbers.
There are approximately 11,000,000 public and private swimming pools in the US. There are approximately 3,700 swimming pool deaths each year.
(3,700/11,000,000)x100 = 0.034% chance of dying in a swimming pool
There are 273.6 million registered vehicles in the US. There are approximately 36,000 motor vehicle related deaths each year.
(36,000/273,600,000)x100 = 0.013% chance of dying due to a motor vehicle related accident.
There have already been 273,000 deaths from Covid in the US which has a population of approximately 331,000,000.
(273,000/331,000,000)x100 = 0.082% chance of dying from Covid
For those who can't figure out the numbers: it is approximately 2.4 times more likely that you will die from Covid this year than by drowning in a swimming pool. It is approximately 6.3 times more likely for you to die from Covid than in a car accident.
To avoid drowning accidents, we put up walls and fences and hire life guards and such.
To avoid fatal car accidents, we post speed limits and enforce numerous safety regulations. We even license, who can be behind the wheel.
These are costly measures which most people put up with because it has been proven time and time again that they save more lives than they hinder.
With Covid, all people have been asked to do is wash their hands (which their mommies probably already taught them to do when they were a toddler), keep a little extra distance between each other (which personal space-minded Americans shouldn't have a problem with), and wear a mask when social distancing might not be completely possible.
The cost of a mask and some hand sanitizer is negligible compared to the costs of constructing walls and fences. It's negligible compared to the costs of safe driving infrastructure, yet for some reason, many Americans (and other morons) balk at these cheap, simple measures meant to keep them safe.
And in the meantime, they keep spouting about how many people die from the common flu each year. Maybe the people who have the flu should wash their hands, keep their distance, and wear a mask for the protection of others every flu season. Maybe those numbers would go down too.
But... but... FREEDOM!
This might shock some of you, but you have the FREEDOM to NOT potentially kill your fellow countrymen, and, more importantly, freedom ain't worth a shit if you're dead.

For the life of me, I don't understand why masks were politicized and made controversial. Agent Orange could have simply used them to spread his messages and been done with it.

[East] ASIAN people where masks.
"[EAST] Asia" = China
"China" = "communism"
"Communism" = "enemy"
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Hating East Asians is the last bastion of acceptable racism left.

That could very well explain it. Sad that racism could inspire self-destruction.

If he'd just used a little common sense, Trump could've played this pandemic differently and ridden it all the way into a second term.

If he'd just used a little common sense, Trump could've played this pandemic differently and ridden it all the way into a second term. Yup. He could have been the president who "saved America" by just getting out in front of it. Sure the "progressives" still would have complained, but they complain when shit isn't brown enough. The libs in the center probably would have swung right for him doing the right thing. SK's prez went from single digit approval ratings prior to the pandemic to nearly 50% approval in just the first few weeks by getting out in front and energizing the people to do what is right. Right now, they are dealing with a second wave but still have an infection rate below 0.07% and only a 1.5% mortality rate among the infected. Of course, the president of South Korea also didn't have to deal with millions of people who think it's their right to kill their friends, family, and neighbors. He didn't have to deal with millions of people who think letting the older generation die is a "boon" to society.

I was just going for something that everyone could recognize as bigotry that is bad as opposed to the "good" bigotry espoused by the "left."

To this day, I still find it difficult to believe that neither him nor his team thought this through more. But then, I've spent the last 50 years or so learning just how stupid the people who supposedly run our planet really are. 2. Sounds like he should write a book... THE ART OF THE PRESIDENCY? 3. Yeah, they've definitely got their priorities straight compared to "the West". I did return home with my lad to look after Mum when it became apparent she'd lost her marbles - 10 years ago tomorrow - but I'm probably in the minority on that front. And even so, she still ended up in professional care within a year. It turns out I couldn't stay awake 24/7, just in case she did something unexpected...

I'm a left-leaning centrist... and I know a few right-leaning centrists... and I don't think we're the problem. It's the far-left and far-right that are... fucking fringe-dwelling extremist lunatics.

When my mom got cancer and was finally allowed to come home from the hospital to do chemo and radiation therapy on an outpatient basis, there was no way that dad, my brother, or sister-in-law could stop working just to care for her. I certainly couldn't drop out of school at 13. We ended up hiring a care-giver.

All those "political maps" put me center-left or center-right economically (depending on the phrasing of the questions) and very close to the "libertarian" edge as opposed to "authoritarian" edge.
I like a lot of freedom with a dash of economic responsibility.
I think that's why my stances don't sit well with either "left" or "right". They promulgate laws with the intention of exerting force. The same laws could be written in ways to maximize freedom not just maximize the appearance of freedom.

I was already on a disability pension by 2010, so that sort of made it easier for me when the call came. My son was in high school, my mum was in la la land and I was somewhere in between.
