Opinion Teachers unions rewards Gavin Newsom with $2 million for its yearlong paid vacation by Tiana Lowe, Commentary Writer | July 28, 2021
Gavin Newsom gave California's teachers unions more than a year of paid vacation. And boy, has it paid off for the California governor.
If the unions' $2 million in donations do indeed help save Newsom from the Sept. 14 recall election he now faces, he might find a way to give them a second school year off.
With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's reversal of its indoor mask guidance, union boss Randi Weingarten has finally said the quiet part out loud. On MSNBC, the head of the American Federation of Teachers refused to commit to an actual, in-person school curriculum this fall.
"While vaccination is our No. 1 gold standard, we need to bring back our masks for schools," Weingarten said. "The bottom line is, we're going to keep kids safe, we're going to keep our members safe, and we're going to try to open up schools."

Find me some sources not biased that way which still criticize the teachers and educational system
Forbes?
I know I've seen pieces on the state of California and almost the entire Baltimore school system.
Maybe even ask yourself WHY would I support underprivileged kids (many of whom are minorities) to receive an at least acceptable education from public schools?

No other state closed schools during the pandemic?

You can check to see if other states' teachers union donated to politicians.
That's one thing I can't come to grips with........how can union members be so OK with all of those dues going towards lobbying? When it pays off like it did recently, I see the financial rewards........but on principle?

You want me to actually express an opinion?
OK
I don't think unions or any other legally incorporated group should be able to donate more to any political campaign than what any other individual can. If the cap on individual donations is $2,000, then a corporation (a "legal individual") should only be able to donate that max as well. I don't want corporations (that includes unions - and groups like the NRA for example) unduly influencing election. Period.
I think it's surprising and shameful that any of these groups would publicly say that they donated with the expectation of special access and accommodation.
I think my position on improving the educational system, top to bottom, has already been discussed at length, so I won't go into it here.
What I find reprehensible about the article is that it states that California teachers got a year's paid vacation. Like most other places, they were still working and giving online classes and such. Just because they weren't in a physical classroom doesn't mean that they weren't working.
I'll be honest, I don't know the exact things that California teachers are looking for but it doesn't look like they are looking for a "paid vacation" and as long as they aren't asking for pie-in-the-sky bullshit like retrofitting all schools with air-filtration systems, I'll just assume that they just want to get back into the classroom without the worry that their learning space will become a Covid incubator.
Word came down Sunday night that we (and other training centers) had to close, so I spent much of yesterday (and will probably spend much of today) preparing for the switch to online classes. I'm just a guy teaching English to Chinese primary school kids and my "weekend" pretty much got shot to shit by having to make such adjustments. Imagine what public school teachers in the US have to go through to re-engineer all of their classes to be online.

Hey, honestly.........which group do you suppose has the larger amount of just plain bad employees? Cops? or Teachers?
I don't doubt many dedicated and decent people teach and spend a good deal of time preparing, even outside of the workplace. THAT has gotta be the most stressful part for them we see and hear how poorly so many public schools are doing. (And even then.......we KNOW it's mostly about the lack of parenting going on.)
In a way, it's gotta be a luxury for you to know most of the parents are fully behind you when it comes to filling those kids up with useful education........ unlike here in the US where the children's feelings come first.

1. I'd say it's probably about the same
2. Yup
3. There are different problems here, but, yes, it is nice to know that the parents are generally on your side.

I didn't intend this with that first post........but in a way, both occupations are kind of relying on the positive attitude of parents being instilled in those kids before they're allowed to interact out in public on their own.

And you have to keep in mind that parents - wittingly or not - bring their own problems into the home and the kids are shaped by it one way or the other... even before the kids ever get out the door.
There's a great explanation in "The Wire" about how dealing with the students on Mondays and Tuesdays is tough because they're still coming down from dealing with their homes and neighborhoods on the weekends. Wednesdays are good days. Thursdays and Fridays are tough because of the building anxiety about the next weekend.

JESUS! That's bleak
You get one good day out of 5?
Sounds like the warnings they used to give about buying cars put together by American union workers in the 70s and 80s.

I believe I've seen an episode or two........but for the longest time now, regular TV series have escaped my attention until they're on cable in syndication/marathons. I'll check it out since the wife is looking for something decent and she seems to gravitate to these modern shows like 911 and firefighter series.......which I find mostly over the top lame.
For years all I ever switched over to Network TV for was the NFL........ though I always thought most of the Law & Order shows were pretty good. (They cheated on the writing since it was mostly stuff right out of the news,) Criminal Intent was my favorite because of Goren/Vincent D' Onofrio

"The Wire" is an excellent series and definitely worth the viewing time. Cops vs Drug Dealers

She's been watching Chicago PD.......with a raspy voiced top cop who seems almost every bit the criminal as the people who he chases down.
It's kinda disturbing
