The concept swiftly spread to other states, but none of them chose to adopt a law as sweeping as California's. By 2004, twenty-six states and the federal government had laws that satisfy the general criteria for designation as "three-strikes" statutes—namely, that a third felony conviction brings a sentence of 20 to life where 20 years must be served before becoming parole eligible. A 1997 study found that in California, "the three-strikes law did not decrease serious crime or petty theft rates below the level expected on the basis of preexisting trends."

You really have no concerns about any of the people you've personally dealt with? You're more frightened by 'conservatives' than actual criminals?

There are apparently 'acceptable' levels of crime. Your state seems to be willing to put up with a lot of it.

San Diego’s Murder Rate Was Up In 2020, But Other Violent Crimes Down

Violent crime in San Diego increased during 2020, but not by nearly as much as it did in some other large cities, data released Tuesday by the San Diego Police Department show.

Overall, the city saw a 1.7% increase in violent crime between 2019 and 2020, with murders going from 50 in 2019 to 55 in 2020. Meanwhile, aggravated assaults were up by 8% and robberies and rapes were slightly down, according to the data presented to the San Diego City Council.


The city’s overall crime rate dropped by 8%, driven largely by reductions in thefts and burglaries.


Southeast San Diego had more murders than any other area of the city, according to the presentation. Ten of the murders in Southeast San Diego were associated with gangs and five with domestic or family violence.

Other cities in the county experienced similar trends, according to crime records obtained by KPBS. Violent crimes increased by between 1% and 50% from 2019 to 2020 in Oceanside, Coronado, Escondido, La Mesa and Chula Vista. Every city except Coronado, which had no murders in 2019 or 2020, saw an increase in murders during 2020.

Overall violent crime was down in Carlsbad by 7% and National City by 4%. Other cities in the county have yet to provide their 2020 crime data to KPBS.

Our 2nd largest city is Killwaukee.   Pretty much cities between there and Chicago are known for higher rates of crime. Racine, Kenosha. Similar issues all along that area.

I think there's been a political game to reclassify crimes......... in  order to claim that crime has declined when it hasn't.

January 6th was a very mild protest......... much more peaceful than dozens of other earlier events the media called 'mostly peaceful'.

Many people still believe evil shenanigans went on during that election. I'm one of them......... however I do not believe anything will ever be done about it.

Can you imagine how sprawled out we are?

I have said it is wild driving the county & hitting "you are now entering the City of San Diego" signs out by the Wild Animal Park in Escondido.  Pretty much this was the City of San Diego & unincorporated County area until various areas incorporated as the various other cities which is why you have the City of San Diego, them National City, then Chula Vista, then Imperial Beach, then right smack against the Mexican Border you have San Ysidro which is part of San Diego.

The nearby San Andreas and Hayward Faults are responsible for much earthquake activity, although neither physically passes through the city itself. The San Andreas Fault caused the earthquakes in 1906 and 1989. Minor earthquakes occur on a regular basis. The threat of major earthquakes plays a large role in the city's infrastructure development. The city constructed an auxiliary water supply system and has repeatedly upgraded its building codes, requiring retrofits for older buildings and higher engineering standards for new construction.[84] However, there are still thousands of smaller buildings that remain vulnerable to quake damage.[85] USGS has released the California earthquake forecast which models earthquake occurrence in California.

San Francisco's shoreline has grown beyond its natural limits. Entire neighborhoods such as the Marina, Mission Bay, and Hunters Point, as well as large sections of the Embarcadero, sit on areas of landfill. Treasure Island was constructed from material dredged from the bay as well as material resulting from the excavation of the Yerba Buena Tunnel through Yerba Buena Island during the construction of the Bay Bridge. Such land tends to be unstable during earthquakes. The resulting soil liquefaction causes extensive damage to property built upon it, as was evidenced in the Marina district during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Most of the city's natural watercourses, such as Islais Creek and Mission Creek, have been culverted and built over, although the Public Utilities Commission is studying proposals to daylight or restore some creeks.

So Frisco is locked in. The only expansion it can do is landfill on the water area.

According to SDSU professor emeritus Monte Marshall, San Diego Bay is "the surface expression of a north-south-trending, nested graben". The Rose Canyon and Point Loma fault zones are part of the San Andreas Fault system. About 40 miles (64 km) east of the bay are the Laguna Mountains in the Peninsular Ranges, which are part of the backbone of the American continents.

The city lies on approximately 200 deep canyons and hills separating its mesas, creating small pockets of natural open space scattered throughout the city and giving it a hilly geography. Traditionally, San Diegans have built their homes and businesses on the mesas, while leaving the urban canyons relatively wild. Thus, the canyons give parts of the city a segmented feel, creating gaps between otherwise proximate neighborhoods and contributing to a low-density, car-centered environment. The San Diego River runs through the middle of San Diego from east to west, creating a river valley that serves to divide the city into northern and southern segments. During the historic period and presumably earlier as well, the river has shifted its flow back and forth between San Diego Bay and Mission Bay, and its fresh water was the focus of the earliest Spanish explorers. Miguel Costansó, a cartographer, wrote in 1769, "When asked by signs where the watering-place was, the Indians pointed to a grove which could be seen at a considerable distance to the northeast, giving to understand that a river or creek flowed through it, and that they would lead our men to it if they would follow." That river was the San Diego River. Several reservoirs and Mission Trails Regional Park also lie between and separate developed areas of the city.

Notable peaks within the city limits include Cowles Mountain, the highest point in the city at 1,591 feet (485 m);[8] Black Mountain at 1,558 feet (475 m); and Mount Soledad at 824 feet (251 m). The Cuyamaca Mountains and Laguna Mountains rise to the east of the city, and beyond the mountains are desert areas. The Cleveland National Forest is a half-hour drive from downtown San Diego. Numerous farms are found in the valleys northeast and southeast of the city.

In its 2013 ParkScore ranking, The Trust for Public Land reported that San Diego had the 9th-best park system among the 50 most populous U.S. cities. ParkScore ranks city park systems by a formula that analyzes acreage, access, and service and investment

So maybe our canyons makes the city feel like a bunch of smaller cities.
