Yeah. Me either, but stories about them pop up in my feed nonetheless.
I just read a story about a "Mixed 4x400 relay" heat where the American team got DQ'd for lining up in the wrong position but because it was an official that made the mistake the DQ was overturned.
I get the whole, "The official said to stand here so that's where I'm standing" thing, but I can tell you that if they had done that on my high school freshman track team, they'd have never made it to JV or varsity, let alone the Olympics.
Every serious runner know the exchange zones and would never line up in the wrong position and chance a DQ just because of some idiot official. Other runners from other teams in other heats also got lined up wrong but moved themselves to the correct positions.
The way I see it, the American runners saw that they were being given an unfair advantage and took it anyway: cheating, or they were more focused on their "podium protest" than actually making it to the podium.
BTW, I had an idea:
Whenever any athlete from any country uses their moment on the podium to protest, the entire audience should stand and turn their backs to the podium. The audience paid a LOOOT of money to watch sports, not political protests.

The NFL was my last sport to watch. That's pretty much gone now.
I have been wondering, what with all of the agendas and cancel culture, etc ......why hasn't the Olympics simply been canceled?
What is it even proposing to accomplish anymore?

Now it's just about marketing.
It's "Sports Christmas." now

You say Toe-Mah-Toe
Eddie Izzard had a great bit on the importance of flags in claiming land, too

I think like a lot of words, it's how it's applied and perceived.
Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me in a few years if they go after that football mascot in New England as triggering to all of the overly sensitive types rolling around now.

Let's go to the dictionary for starters:
Nationalist: A person devoted to nationalism
Nationalism: excessive patriotism; chauvinism (zealous and aggressive patriotism or blind enthusiasm for military glory; biased devotion to any group, attitude, or cause)
the policy or doctrine of asserting the interests of one's own nation viewed as separate from the interests of other nations or the common interests of all nations.
Patriotism: devoted love, support, and defense of one's country
If you can't see the difference, then you really need to go back to school... start at 3rd grade and start working yourself forward.
As for the NE Patriots, there was a kerfuffle some time ago about the word "patriot" having a negative connotation, but once those people learned the difference between "patriot" and "nationalist" it all went away.

Was that the first definition you found? or did you search a little harder to find it?
nationalism [ˈnaSH(ə)nəˌlizəm] NOUN
identification with one's own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations. ========================================
In any competition, I don't know how you can hope your team wins without realizing it'll be to the detriment and exclusion of other teams.
here's some more.............
synonyms: patriotism · patriotic sentiment · allegiance/loyalty to one's country · loyalism · nationality
advocacy of or support for the political independence of a particular nation or people.
I got no problem with any of those 3.
And don't forget, having nationalist feelings towards the USA is for all of it's citizens.

It was easy
And yet, in the Olympics, somehow even second and third place still get medals.
Some of the athletes that compete but fail to get medals will still get endorsement deals, end up in books about sports history, and find other ways to capitalize on their Olympic participation.
"Winning" in the economy doesn't have to include hurting or even killing other people.
Something that's missing from much of sports today is something that has been missing from extremists in politics for a long time: good sportsmanship.
That's what nationalism is: trying to win at the expense of sportsmanship.

I believe in sportsmanship. I also believe in striving to compete and win. That also means somebody will take 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc etc
I agree sportsmanship has been downplayed or has gone extinct.........but at the same time, handing trophies to everyone hasn't improved things, either.

I think Mike Rowe liked Bill's video clip, too...........
Mike Rowe
Off the Wall Mike - Can you please explain to me how anyone could criticize Simone Biles for deciding to remove herself from the Olympics? You’ve always been reasonable in your opinions, but I’m curious if you can justify the comments of those conservatives who have called her a “quitter,” and worse. Do you see the racism in such attacks? The misogyny? The cruelty? Doris Christie
Hi Doris I can’t speak for anyone but me, but from what I’ve read on the matter, those most critical of her decision did not seem motivated by race or gender. I could be wrong, but everything I saw was in response to the initial reaction in the mainstream media that described Simone’s decision as “heroic.” In that regard, I’m afraid I agree with those who objected. There is nothing inherently “heroic” about taking yourself out of a competition. But nor is there anything inherently villainous. It takes courage to do anything that you know will disappoint millions of people and based on her many extraordinary accomplishments and unprecedented athletic feats – all performed under incomprehensible pressure - it’s silly to suggest her decision was motivated by fear, or indifference, or some other character flaw. But it’s equally silly to “celebrate” her decision as laudable, or accuse those who do not see her as heroic as racist. Athletic excellence is reserved for those competitors who are willing to assume risk, ignore pain, and overcome doubt. Clearly, Simone Biles has done that too many times to count. But on this day, she did not. This should not be a difficult thing to accept, but today, it is. Because today, everyone must be made into a hero or a villain. Journalists, politicians, scientists, celebrities, athletes – we drag them all to the extremes, to be mocked or celebrated by one side or the other. The middle ground today is skinnier than a balance beam, and just as hard to land upon. The bigger issue, in my opinion, is the Olympics themselves, and their apparent desire to follow in the doomed footsteps of the Oscars. Like millions of others, I miss the days when the Oscars celebrated artistic excellence, and the Olympics celebrated athletic excellence. I miss the days when for just a few hours, we were allowed to see something great in our species, separate and apart from the constant reminders of what’s wrong, or what could be better, or who said something in the distant past that's no longer acceptable today. As this video explains, “not all change is progress.”
Mike PS. If you want to share my comments along with this video, you'll need to copy and past them. Otherwise, they go...somewhere else.

I'm no fan of the "participation trophy" but neither am I a fan of the notion that not getting a trophy foments healthy competition and personal growth.
I think we can both agree that the solution really has to do with engaged parenting: if your child can't run as fast as Little Johnny, you either have to set your child on a routine of training or simply encourage your child to find something that they are good at... and if truly necessary that Little Johnny is not good at.
This is the type of competition that is really needed: finding what you're best at and doing it well not trying to be the best at everything. The latter encourages feelings of depression and hate and instills in one the desire for revenge. I suspect that everyone at some point in their lives or another has had the "I'll show them" fantasy.
Sadly, those fantasies manifest in reality whether it be bullied kids shooting up a school or politicians constantly trying to undo the policies of their predecessors, even when the policies were actually, objectively good... or just countries throwing their weight around in order to control a resource or industry that they are - in fact - no longer the leader in.
Also, learning to accept your shortcomings and accept what you're good at - especially when the latter is less important to you than the former - would probably reduce suicides.
A friend of mine in high school graduated a couple years before me. He graduated with a 5.0 GPA out of 4 because he took so many "honors" and AP courses. He never got less than 100% on a test, got a perfect score on the SATs, and was accepted at Harvard. He committed suicide after just one semester. He had been a big fish in our little pond, but at Harvard, he was just one of many and no longer the biggest. When he found that he could no longer compete in all subjects as Number 1, he hung himself. He never learned that being 2nd or 3rd was OK. He never learned to embrace a single thing that he could call his own. He wanted it all and found himself lacking.
I think that's where America is today: they created the global economy and dominated it for so long that we just don't know how to step back and accept that it's OK for there to be other big fish. It's OK if those big fish excel at certain things that America no longer excels at. The more we try to be the best at everything, the more the other fish actually nibble away at us. The more they nibble, the angrier we get and lash out. The more time we spend lashing out and screaming about our superiority, the smaller we become... the closer to destruction we draw.
What does America have to inspire nationalism but PAST glories and hatred of those that are winning.
As a wise fictional character once said, "Never hate your enemies, it clouds your judgment."
Patriots are also inspired by past glories but they don't have hatred for their enemies. They have disappointment in their country for faltering. Patriots look for internal solutions that will have external benefits.
We used to a country of men and women fit in body and mind. Now we import them because the "strong in mind" are so often bullied by the "strong in body" while the rest get fat and bitch about it.
We have the best colleges in the world but we can barely graduate but a few high schoolers worthy of their hallowed halls.
We used to innovate but now we just give away patents for choosing colors for lanyards and then spend billions of dollars on IP litigation.
We used to make things, but now we just buy them... with borrowed money.
We beat our chests about how we have freedom and equality but deny entry to other seeking freedom all the while maintaining policies that are the absolute opposite of equality, which in turn limits the freedom of our own countrymen.
Nationalists keep talking about the enemies without while patriots know that the enemy is within.
A very real person has been humorously misquoted for two centuries, yet the misquote is far too apt:
"We have met the enemy and they are us,"

I think that's excellent advice to identify what each individual is good at and then develop it to success. imo, that goes against the notion of pushing for a 'well rounded' education for all, though. I am NOT against learning or education or perpetual discovery........but wasting public resources on futility is a serious issue.
Instead of trying to eliminate bullying, it seems to me the much smarter and effective approach is learning how to handle being bullied.
Little pond? That's pretty sad that someone with so much potential just couldn't see it in themselves.
What America has to be nationalistic about is the very same thing it had from the beginning.......Opportunity. The 'gates theory' alone should tell you that compared to many other places, people realize how great a thing it is to be here. If the people and the Govt would simply stop doing all it can to restrict citizens, we'd see even more growth. We certainly see a high level of it in newly arrived legal immigrants.......and even among many illegal immigrants. To me that says a lot about Americans themselves that complain they just can't make it in this rigged system.
Here again, I think when opponents to my views assign me with the label of 'hate' for illegals, they're completely missing the point. I don't hate them...... I understand exactly why they're doing what they're doing. It's just not legal, nor should it be, imo.
The enemy within is our own people and politicians undermining the country itself. No borders? No laws? No rules? No protections for private property and individuals? Welcome chaos.

1. Can we agree that were the money well-spent, you'd be onboard?
2. Which option do you prefer: The "turn the other cheek" method in the hopes that the bullying will stop in the face of ineffectiveness but which usually leads to bullying becoming harsher and more violent, or the "stand up to the bully" method which rarely works outside of fables?
3. Yes. My high school is certainly well-regarded - prestigious even - but the student body is not very large... tiny compared to the student body of Harvard. And Bob's death was certainly tragic and wasteful.
4. What you just posted was patriotic in tone, but I can't help feel a bit of nationalism behind the "Govt would simply stop doing all it can to restrict citizens" comment knowing that you actually don't mind restrictions on certain demographic segments.
5. I wasn't speaking of just "illegals" but you DO love coming back to the topic....
6. We have borders and they are guarded (even if it's not as well as either of us would like). We have laws, but many of them actually undermine the basic precepts of our constitution. We have rules, but ditto the previous. We have plenty of protections for private property and individuals.
I just had a weird image of a middle-aged ginger man, wearing a plaid, flannel shirt and MAGA hat sitting down for a pedicure and upon seeing the technician clip a toenail half a millimeter too short, him jumping up and accusing the technician of trying to cut off his leg.
Weird, huh?

1. While I'd still rail against higher taxes....... I always want them to be spent wisely and efficiently.
2. I believe in maybe turning 1 cheek, but then after the 2nd strike, you're out of cheeks and it's time to poke back. I went thru a short period of bullying in the 7th Grade, thereafter I went out of my way to stop bullying wherever I saw it in my surroundings. But as an adult, I see far too many that never equipped themselves to dealing with things themselves.....and that disappoints me as I expect adults to be just that.
3. The tragic thing about suicide in cases like that.......you realize it's just youthful angst that IF they had just avoided it for a few more years, they likely would have matured and seen that every few years you look back and understand that what seemed SO important at 10, is not so important at 15.....and 15 is not so important at 20.......and 20 is not so important at 25.....and on and on it goes. The wisdom of hindsight often only comes with surviving the irrationality of youthful exuberance.
4. How can you say that when I constantly state that the Law should apply to everyone equally? And if they don't wanna enforce the law anymore, then get rid of the damn thing. There's also the issue I have with quite so many laws and regulations.
5. I'm not going to shy away from what I see as an obvious and detrimental part of our modern society. Crime begets more crime. Against sex trafficking? Then you gotta be against illegal immigration.
6. That does not seem to be the case to me. I know you disagree. And as this eviction moratorium is threatening to finally end, I see property owners as the big losers yet again. When they mandated no evictions, WHY didn't they also just PAUSE all mortgage payments at the exact same time? Why is it OK to screw over the minority property owners in favor of the majority renting voters? I know why........and I do not approve.
You think I'd pay for a pedicure? Even at the lower rates of smuggled in Asian workers? I do not own a MAGA hat, never been a big fan of the color Red. I do kinda like all of the dark Blue Trump signs that I still see many people opting to fly to this day.

And if we lived in a world of parental engagement, where everyone's contribution - no matter how meager - was simply accepted, there'd be so few bullies that they would be viewed as a cultural aberration.
3. And with engaged parenting there'd be less worry on that account.
4. I'll give you two scenarios and you can tell me how you feel about each one, OK? You can't ask questions. You have to base your response simply on what is stated.
Scenario 1: A white man steps out of a building to confront an angry mob. He is brandishing firearms.
Scenario 2: A group of black men and women, dressed in all-black BDUs, march down a city street. All of them are carrying rifles.
5. I get your point, but what I'm really getting at is that just because I'm against theft doesn't mean that an 8-year-old black kid should get 6 months in juvie while his white partner in crime just gets a stern talking to.
6. Thank you for proving the "pedicure scenario."
