The New York Times Pandemic Aid Programs Spur a Record Drop in PovertyJason DeParle Thu, July 29, 2021, 7:00 AM
WASHINGTON — The huge increase in government aid prompted by the coronavirus pandemic will cut poverty nearly in half this year from prepandemic levels and push the share of Americans in poverty to the lowest level on record, according to the most comprehensive analysis yet of a vast but temporary expansion of the safety net. The number of poor Americans is expected to fall by nearly 20 million from 2018 levels, a decline of almost 45%. The country has never cut poverty so much in such a short period of time, and the development is especially notable since it defies economic headwinds — the economy has nearly 7 million fewer jobs than it did before the pandemic. The extraordinary reduction in poverty has come at extraordinary cost, with annual spending on major programs projected to rise fourfold to more than $1 trillion. Yet without further expensive new measures, millions of families may find the escape from poverty brief. The three programs that cut poverty most — stimulus checks, increased food stamps and expanded unemployment insurance — have ended or are scheduled to soon revert to their prepandemic size. Sign up for The Morning newsletter from the New York Times While poverty has fallen most among children, its retreat is remarkably broad: It has dropped among Americans who are white, Black, Latino and Asian, and among Americans of every age group and residents of every state.
Finally, it's fixed! Right?

If you really want to fix the poverty epidemic you have to take back some of what was stolen taken improperly by the billionaires. You would also then need a competent government that can budget funds properly.

I say, ban lobbying.

Let's just stick with the bribing of voters in exchange for their votes with endless 'free' handouts.

I would also add:
...And the education so that we could be in the running for the job
...And the stress-free life that comes from knowing that you won't have to lose your house if you get hurt

Nonsense.
I am the proof that even low wage earners can get by quite nicely with the right amount of planning.
I've seen what Americans that make multiple times what I make do with their money.......they spend it. And still wail about not being able to make ends meet.

Does " the right amount of planning" just mean marrying someone who earns more, because they have a decent paying job? Not that there's anything wrong with that... In fact, I wish I'd thought of it.

Sugar Daddies and Mommies work, too
But in my case, since we split our common bills 50/50........ it simply requires a pairing of any sort. 2 workers can live cheaper than 1.
If you could stomach it, 3 or more would reduce the costs, as well.
The conundrum is that living with other people is about the most difficult thing to do.

In my time, I've shared with one other person a couple of times, two other people - on numerous occasions - and even six other people, three of whom were children under 10 years of age. I have no real regrets, as it's all part of my personal journey, but I have no desire to revisit any of my former living arrangements. I live alone now for a reason.

The right amount of planning... and a wife that makes double your income. You always leave that part out.
Oh yeah. You two split everything right down the middle.
Maybe you should provide some lessons on Youtube. You show people how to live within their means and you make money from the advertisers... who absolutely don't want your viewers to live within their means.
Stop bitching about what people ought to know and start teaching them.
Do it on your Twitter... Instagram... Facebook... Hell, do it here. Make a series like I did about China. Invite GBPPH over to join you. He's another one who's good at living within his means. If you want, I'll make a board just for you guys in the Health and Fitness section. I'll change the Category to "Lifestyle" and a board called "Living Within Your Means"
Let me know

I have done it here and at the previous site. And i was repeatedly scoffed at.
About the only time GBPPH ever put aside his political leanings was when he actually agreed with me that Food Stamps/EBT were actually more than enough $money for most people provided they actually went to the grocery store and bought wisely. I believe the phrase he used was "We ate like kings!"
He actually has done better than I have by a long shot as he got a great education, was employed at a pretty great wage and invested wisely all along......thus able to basically retire much earlier than most Americans.
I would never push myself as a Health & Fitness type given my diet and personal vices.
Just an example of the kind of advice I often dispense......... a friend of mine's wife was using a Subaru turbo to commute her job offering hospice care all over the county. Even though it's a small Subaru, it was only getting 16-18 MPG. Since I am currently only putting on about 8 miles/day........ I suggested selling my Toyota Prius C to them. It has led them to save a ton in fuel costs alone already. 48-53 MPG does make a difference.........especially when the price of gas has gone up over $1/Gallon. Now if they'd just listen to me about getting a Gas Card and receiving all sorts of discounts and rewards instead of just paying for gas out of pocket.

1. I think there's a difference between "being informative" and "being a dick" . Try the former.
2. So go get him.
3. I did say that I would change the Category name, right?
4. Your "advice" was for them to give you money?
Yes. We get the point, but do you see how presentation matters?

We don't all live in Wisconsin. My rent is $300 less here at the new apartment. $1700/month.

The further you are down the ladder, the less likely you're going to be able to pull off that type of planning. There are exceptions though, but they're not the rule. Also when you get down to a far enough rung, no amount of planning will help. And that rung is getting higher and higher over time, if that makes sense.

Millions more couldn't come up with $400 in an emergency. Why act surprised or shocked?
But they seem to find the funds for many, many of their daily vices
