"China" the government or "China" the people? Reread the series The people... But from about 30 or 40 years ago. The Chinese have ALWAYS loved anything that makes them appear superior (richer) to their neighbors.
Much like paper money, I'm pretty sure that the Chinese invented consumerism despite a short hiatus from '49 to '79.

There appear to be variations of both... some of which are practically identical to each other. Either way, not something I'd be in a hurry to wear again. True. I might have been stylin' in primary school with my plaid bells, but today... not so much. Pictures or it didn't happen.  |

Well, I was only commenting from a personal perspective... and that only reaches back so far. However, it does partly overlap with the short hiatus you mentioned, when things were different from today. |
