So my Layla has hypothyroidism. I have mixed feelings because I'm sad she has it but glad I have an answer for why she's turned into such a meatball! And also for why she's been acting different lately. I thought it was just due to age and it was making me sad. I'm just glad she'll hopefully get some pep back in her step. No word on the puppy I applied for and I can't get a hold of anyone. Hmmmm. I put in an inquiry for another puppy and am going to follow up today. I'd be open to an older dog but my mom is worried about her cat and really wants us to get a puppy. I was actually considering a retired Greyhound before. They're very mellow couch potatoes in the house. I'd love to get a dog I could get certified as a therapy dog. It's all about the right temperament. Rescue group members are notoriously busy and sometimes it is a few days before someone can get back to you. Many of them work full-time at someplace else, and rescue stuff is squeezed into a break or lunch hour. Our group is all-volunteer, and there is no one contact person that is available all the time, so do not despair, you may get a response back just a little later than you expect. Good groups also contact your vet for verification of your suitability as an adopter, and that takes time, too. Whatever dog you inquire about make certain and clear to the rescue person that you have to have a dog that is non-cat aggressive. NO PREY DRIVE. I learned that the hard way once and lost a beloved cat in the process. I am glad Layla has a solid diagnosis and will probably do great on the meds. Hang in there on the puppy quest! P.S. There are more things I can fill you in on introducing a new pet into a household, but I gotta feed my baby goat, he says he is STARVING!!!!!! It happens frequently throughout the day, lol!

So after making it seem like adopting Sasha the Corgi was a done deal, they adopted her right out from under me. I was so irritated. The search continues.
I'm in MI visiting my daughter and the kids. My mom is...okay. She seems to decline a little and then plateau. I honestly think she's over medicated, but that's a whole other thing. I'm worried about her with the steps, but my brother is with her. I haven't been to MI in awhile, and I really needed to come up here. My daughter is moving into a bigger place in a month, and things are a bit frazzled here. Of course, I made it 10 minutes before wanting to choke the daylights out of her, but this is why historically daughters came dowries. Two chickens and goat come with her if you get her out of our hair 😶
I jest. I love my daughter, she's just a lot. She's one of those big extroverted personalities, and of course, she doesn't listen to anything, but we always had a very sibling-like relationship since I was pretty much a kid myself when she was born. Oh, and she has a pregnant cat on top of all the moving craziness. So she'll be trying to home kittens. Anyone want a kitten? I'll bring it to you.
My Layla has perked up since being on her thyroid medicine, but she still isn't eating well. This worries me. We have a follow-up appointment coming up, and I'm hoping she's just getting finicky in her old age. Losing this dog will be like losing a limb.

We have a follow-up appointment coming up, and I'm hoping she's just getting finicky in her old age. Losing this dog will be like losing a limb. No, thanks on the kittens... I have five bottle babies that dropped into my life Sunday night, from the vet's clinic. Feral mama was trapped, they didn't realize she had kittens so after they found the kittens, they released the mama kitty and predictably, she ran away and hadn't come back for the kittens. So, just after weaning the bottle baby goat, here come the kittens! Multiple feeding during the day and night - their eyes are open, but they are still small and were dehydrated when I got them. Their urine was dark. Sub-q fluids helped; they are now drinking from the bottle instead of an eyedropper. They are on antibiotics for poop issues, and improving, so I can't complain. I hope Layla eats better, are you tempting her with delicacies? My go-to delicacy is Gerber's chicken baby food. If they won't snarf that down eagerly, it is time to go to the vet. I'm so sorry you didn't get Sasha, that really sucks. Any explanation from the rescue? I would avoid dealing with them in the future, something ain't right. I hope your mom is stable while you are gone, and when you get back, you can be her advocate on the medication issue. Our healthcare system has seemingly lost all logic and reason, and any real concern for the patients and their quality of life. Thankfully, I can stand up for myself now, after being my husband's and father's advocate. And if I can't speak for myself, I have three veterinarians on my power of attorney for health care - MY vets, that know that I want to be treated the way they have treated my companion pets. It's good to have you over here again. That other board is so contentious and there are so many trolls and long, drawn out threads about some minor thing. Yikes!

Awww, those baby kitties sound like a lot of work, but so worth it! Poor mama though I hope she finds a home in someone's barn as a mouser. They have programs in MI for feral cats with farms. Living in the country it's pretty much mandatory up there you have a cat to keep the critters out in winter. My ex has decided he needs a kitten to play with the the cat I rescued and rehomed with him last fall, so my daughter already has a home for one kitten. Our gray tabby recently passed away. I was sad, but that cat led a really long, and happy life as king of the yard. Our (now his) house is situated between two farms. Cat king kept the 'coons and possums out of the garbage and the mice out of the house, and no other cats dare tread in HIS yard! Damn, he was great cat. Died fat and happy at age 15 in my ex's favorite easy chair right after a petting session. I cried, but it was like when your 95-year-old papaw passes peacefully in his sleep. That rescue was shady. After they adopted Sasha out from under me the lady gave me a list of puppies she got in and they were all purebred and "designer dog" breeds. I thanked her and bowed out. There is a rescue right here in town that have a few puppies that might be a good fit. Their application was long, and detailed (the other's really wasn't all that involved, which was also a red flag, but Sasha's little face...). I keep going back to a German Shepard/Husky mix puppy that looks like he'd love my fenced yard and to explore the hiking trails with me. He's a bigger dog than I originally wanted, but sometimes what you need is even more than what you want. He's an interesting looking pup, got the coat of a GS but it's patterned like a husky. The rescue says he's good with kids, cats, and other dogs. Fingers crossed! I'm back in PA. I left yesterday, because today is my birthday, and I didn't want to spend it driving, I want to spend it with my mom. I bought myself some beautiful potted tulips. They're bright yellow, and so happy and fun. I love spring flowers, and the only bulbs the deer won't here are daffodils. I can't even tell you the last time someone gifted me flowers, so I gifted myself! Happy birthday to me! Mom wants to take me to the movies today, if she's up to it. My daughter gifted me this really beautiful blanket, from her and the kids, with a sweet saying about moms. I miss them already, but I'm hoping once their moving nuttiness is over, they'll come down here. My granddaughter just adores my mother.

I miss them already, but I'm hoping once their moving nuttiness is over, they'll come down here. My granddaughter just adores my mother. Happy Birthday! I always gift myself with something for my birthday, usually something potted that I can plant outside later. Tulips are lovely, and yes, the deer here never eat my daffodils. I have a fenced area in front of my house, where the dogs can play, and there is an inner fence where I plant shade flowers. No deer would even think about jumping in that! Yeah, that rescue group was shady. Our group has pet quality cats from breeders, but we don't 'push' anyone that way, we have other Siamese and Siamese mixes that we have rescued from shelters and owner-surrenders, as in "my kid is allergic" or "we're moving", which are individual families that know we exist. We list everything on Petfinder. We do take in the occasional "domestic" cat if there is a special needs issue, but limiting what we take in by breed keeps us from being overwhelmed. We receive no state or county money, we are an all-volunteer 501 (c) 3 non-profit group that fosters in homes, so 100% of any adoption fee or donation goes directly to the care, feeding and vet bills for the cats. We are licensed and inspected by the state, and have local vets that we utilize. No overhead costs like electricity, staff, a brick-and-mortar shelter, etc. And what we adopt out has been neutered and received all shots except rabies, and we have a two-week trial period; if the match is not a good one, an adopter can simply return it for the adoption fee or try a different cat. And we always ask that if the adopter has to surrender the cat, that it comes back to us. Your shepherd/husky mix sound like a good choice, especially for hiking, and that is a good mix. I hope this one works out for you. Check to see if that rescue is licensed and inspected by the state, and that they are a registered non-profit. Some folks 'say' they are a rescue, and they aren't legit. Sadly, not all humans are good ones. I hope your granddaughter gets to spend some quality time with your mother; that is important for kids and great-grandmothers. I barely knew my mother's parents, and my dad's parents died before I was born, so that was something my childhood lacked. I am glad one of your daughter's kittens will have a home with your ex. And congrats on the 'mom' blanket! Mine will go to the vet clinic to be adopted out. We have a special arrangement; I spend the time, energy and money to bottle feed the kittens, and they provide free vet care but get the adoption fee at the end. And most adopters are already clients, so I don't have to worry about where the babies are going. I do this outside of Kansas City Siamese Rescue; I will take whatever babies need me, brown tabbies or black, doesn't matter. Since I am under the wing of the vet clinic, I didn't pursue non-profit status - too much paperwork, need a board of directors, etc., and there is a limit to how many I can handle. They are round-the-clock work. But I love them; one of my friends says that "kittens are my bliss". They get a chance to find a forever home, and they don't make any more babies. The vet clinic will take the kittens if the owner will spay the female. It has really cut down on the number that get dumped; the clinic has made a real difference. They will attempt to adopt out mom cats, but if the moms are feral, they have a huge property with a feral population that they feed and provide shelter for. The general public doesn't know about this. I kept one of the mom cats that they thought would have to go to that place, but she bonded with me and she was such a good mom that I kept her. She deserved her forever home, too. She is my main mouser in the house! And I have a rescued feral outside that takes care of the outdoor varmints. Good moms deserve the best! She sleeps with me and two of my Siamese Rescue 'fails'; I fostered them but just couldn't let them go. Yeah, I know, 'sucker', LOL. It's tattooed on my forehead in ink that only animals can see.

So the rescue is checking my vet references! Fingers crossed! Here is a picture of Keeko. Some POS dumped him by the garbage and left him to die. He was so sick he was going to have to be euthanized, so the county he was in sent out an emergency plea and the rescue scooped him up. He was in another state, initially, but somehow ended up here! Maybe fate to be with me! I'm thinking the rescue has been waiting on a fenced yard for him since he's half husky, and I have one! Fingers crossed! Fingers and eyes crossed! Keeko looks like he would be a great match for you, and congrats on having a fenced yard! Rescue groups do prefer that for dogs. And he's mine! The rescue brought him over for a house check and a visit, it went well, I signed the papers, and he's home! And he's the greatest. He has a very laid back and gentle personality for a puppy. He doesn't bark. We went for our first walk and he loved it. His paws are HUGE. He's going to be my gentle giant. But, having a big dog while I'm walking alone on the trails is not bad thing, no one else needs to know he's a big baby. Layla is butthurt, but I expected a period of adjustment. Tonight Layla is sleeping with me so she knows she's not being replaced, and Koda is sleeping with my mom. I guess the foster family was calling him Thorne. I hate that. So I have named him Koda, after the the kodama, Japanese tree spirits in Princess Mononoke. And he seems to be such a gentle spirit, it suits him! Now to get him in a puppy class! I'm really hoping I can get him certified as a therapy dog.

He sounds just perfect, and his size will counter any thoughts by others that he is a gentle spirit. And honestly, even the most gentle-spirited dog can protect when they sense their human is at risk. When I was just a baby, our dog would escort me on walks in my baby carriage, and the neighbor dog would guard the other side of the carriage - they were a team, and NOBODY got near their baby! Congratulations! And just in time for Mother's Day!
