NY Daily News Law enforcement recruits struck by motorist during morning run in California Jessica Schladebeck, New York Daily News Wed, November 16, 2022 at 10:00 AM·2 min read
A group of Southern California law enforcement recruits were mowed down by a motorist on Wednesday while they were out for a morning run.
The incident unfolded around 6:20 a.m. on Mills Ave. in Whittier, which is about 20 miles outside of Los Angeles, according to the California Highway Patrol. Footage from the scene shows debris scattered across the roadway and a damaged SUV on the sidewalk not far from a downed light pole.
Running shoes and backpacks were also flung about the scene.
The vehicle was driving in the wrong direction when it plowed through a pack of 70 law enforcement trainees jogging in formation, CHP Assistant Chief Charlie Sampson said. They were running in four columns with two black-and-white radio cars and eight “road guards” wearing reflective vests.
Five of those recruits are in critical condition, four are being treated for “immediate” injuries and 13 have minor injuries. Sheriff Alex Villanueva said some of the most serious injuries included “loss of limb,” head trauma, and broken bones.
All of the victims attend the Sheriff’s Training Academy and Regional Services Center, a training institute for police officers and law enforcement located about a mile and a half from the site of the crash.
“It is hard to see because these young people are getting ready to go put themselves in the line of danger in their career, and who knows that while you’re training to do that, you’ve put yourself in harm’s way,” Los Angeles County Fire Department spokeswoman Capt. Sheila Kelliher told reporters. “So my heart goes out to all of them as they pursue this career. I hope they all have speedy recoveries and that they’re in good shape.”
A suspect was in custody and has been hospitalized with minor injuries. He was identified only as a 22-year-old man from Diamond Bar.
Villanueva noted the driver passed a field sobriety test and “blew a 0.0 on a breathalyzer.”
Officials said there was no immediate information on how the driver lost control of the vehicle.
comments: 14 hours ago This has to be intentional. How would a driver going the wrong way hit that many people without knowing it or stopping? This driver wasn't under the influence of alcohol either. Unless it was drugs, then he did it intentionally. He's probably a Supporter of the Defund the Police Movement.
22 hours ago In my mind Yahoo holds some responsibility for these acts of violence by promoting an anti police, and promoting an anti conservative view point......
6 hours ago Will probably be set free on bail by DA Gascon. The LA Times and Yahoo promote this anti-police sentiment
9 hours ago Still haven't named the driver must be illegal.

Karma's a bitch sometimes.
Hope the guy doesn't get put into any kind of jail because he will probably not make it out alive.

But now they released him?
Pot? I thought no one hurt anyone while using pot.
Wait!
But Newsom is a Democrat! Democrats can't support law enforcement, can we, ABBEY?

ya think Kamala and others might fund his bail?
And that 'high bar' won't be all that difficult to prove since most cars these days have little black boxes now.

You're not shocked he was released, are you? It's what your side has been pushing for.
And Gov Newsome, like most politicians, learn to speak out of both sides of their mouths early on.

He was released because the case isn't as airtight as it needs to be. The sheriff issued a fucking statement to that effect. Why are so many people simply ignoring it?

And no one is pushing to let violent criminals go. They're pushing to make the bail/bond system equitable.
Aren't you the one who bitches about insurrectionists languishing in prison for so long? That's because they can't afford to partake in the bail/bond system.
Of course, with you and your Q-Anon buddies, you're just upset that some white people are getting the same treatment they love doling out on the black and brown population.
You're such a fucking hypocrite.

Some of the really neat things you learn in life comes from listening to defense attorneys. For instance, I never knew the word deliberate was vague.
Often people get arrested and released... sure, for minor offenses that shouldn't clog up the jails. This guy ran into and injured multiple people. You shouldn't need to prove intent so much as know that's what happened. I say let him sit in jail while they sort it out, the 5 he critically injured are in their own jail right now
15 hours ago
Seems to me, involuntary manslaughter would be a reasonable charge to start; twenty five injured is undisputable evidence, regardless of the degree of fault.
It is not the driver. It was the car. We need stricter car control laws.
Insufficient evidence at this time is why he was released. I suspect it was deliberate. The driver was not drunk and he went the wrong way to hit the people. So it sure points as a deliberate act but maybe he simply fell asleep and it was not deliberate. I guess they will have to investigate the driver talk to friends and relatives and what he put on the internet, etc. If he has a history of hating cops the case against him can be made but absent that it's a question.
So what do we know about this suspect? Is he here legally? If legal, did they take his passport if he had one? Does he have ties here? Is he a flight risk? This seems fishy to me. How come people in J6 who have committed misdemeanors are still in solitary confinement 2 years later?
There really are less consequences for committing crimes than there used to be. Guess what, more people have decided on a life of crime
15 hours ago
Please change whatever laws allow a person who attempts to kill 25 police officers to get out of jail. Put him in jail, period, and keep him there until his trial is over.
At that point, if guilty, at least 20 years in prison. If found not guilty then no drivers license ever. He is either a murderer or someone who is not capable of driving in America.
not to fear, he's not a flight risk. We have a good rapport with Mexico if he does leave, they'll send him right back. I'm certain of this . . . . .
This man will flee the country and get lost some where in Mexico if he did this intentionally why was he released? maybe because they weren't Police officers yet they were in training.
Q: "Why was driver suspected of crashing into 25 sheriff's recruits suddenly set free?"
A: Because the American Justice System has nothing to do with Justice

A bunch of non-lawyers, non-lawyering
And right there, among your comments is another hypocrite making the same mistake as you about the insurrectionists.
AND I can't help but notice the racism.
If this guy had a nice "white" name like... Rittenhouse... you guys would want to make sure he didn't serve a day for what could have been a mechanical malfunction of the car.
I don't know what definitively happened out there and neither do you or any of your racist buddies. THAT is why he's not in jail: presumption of innocence. If you don't like the concept, move.

I suspect he's American. Most likely. If he were an illegal they would have held him in detention no matter what Abbey thinks.

Unless he wanted to be deported like that dude in Vegas he also wouldn't be doing stuff like plowing into people. They tend to keep off the radar as much as possible. He is acting more like an entitled American. This area was in Spanish hands before America got it. We have lots of Gutierrezes & Herreras who have been here for generations

Just because the person has a Hispanic name doesn't mean they are undocumented. Their people may have been here before the Spanish came. Because the people in your comments were speculating the guy was undocumented. Which is still being debated. They came over from Russia across the Bering Strait They came in boats from Japan. They came in boats from Pacific Islands.

of course not..........but, there's no denying that the vast majority of illegals are Hispanic.......and have been for quite some time.
They came from China, they came from Scandinavia, and on and on and on. And whoever bested the previous occupants got to lay claim to the lands. Even now.......you'd think the map of the world was written in stone.......but that's not how China sees it. That's not how Russia is behaving. And the US? Funding all sorts of proxy wars? While ignoring it's own borders?
