Biden lost temper with Zelenskyy during phone call over Ukraine aid

It’s become routine since Russia invaded Ukraine: President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speak by phone whenever the U.S. announces a new package of military assistance for Kyiv.
But a phone call between the two leaders in June played out differently from previous ones, according to four people familiar with the call. Biden had barely finished telling Zelenskyy he’d just greenlighted another $1 billion in U.S. military assistance for Ukraine when Zelenskyy started listing all the additional help he needed and wasn’t getting. Biden lost his temper, the people familiar with the call said. The American people were being quite generous, and his administration and the U.S. military were working hard to help Ukraine, he said, raising his voice, and Zelenskyy could show a little more gratitude.
Administration officials said Biden and Zelenskyy’s relationship has only improved since the June phone call, after which Zelenskyy made a statement praising the U.S. for its generous assistance. But the clash reflects Biden’s early awareness that both congressional and public support for sending billions of dollars to Ukraine could begin to fade. That moment has arrived just as the president prepares to ask Congress to greenlight even more money for Ukraine.
Biden now faces resistance from some Republicans and Democrats that wasn’t present when Congress approved previous Ukraine funds. The White House has discussed asking Congress for billions of dollars during the lame-duck legislative session after the midterm elections.
The White House hasn’t specified an amount publicly. Lawmakers and Ukraine lobbyists hope for $40 billion to $60 billion, and some officials familiar with the discussions expect the number to be roughly $50 billion.
A source familiar with the conversation said that Biden was direct with Zelenskyy about handling the issues in the appropriate military channels but that the exchange wasn’t heated or angry.
A spokesperson for the National Security Council declined to comment on the story.
A spokesperson for Zelenskyy didn’t respond to a request for comment.
Top U.S. officials warn there are no signs the war is ending any time soon.

Why is it that when it comes to war, Congress suddenly has magical billions to throw at it, but when it comes to helping the poor, the hungry, the old, or the disabled, they whine and moan about a few million here or there? It's time that America got its priorities straight and started taking care of all of the problems at home before we go out trying to save the rest of the world. There's plenty that needs to be saved at home.

I might add, to make sure those millions to Our People in need here, should not include pork for pet projects either. I think the biggest complaint by the Tax payers is when they give money to our people only a fraction goes where they claim it is going. No more pet projects, or to pad political Org or lobbyist. They need to streamline it to the place they claim it going and all of it should go there, not organizations tgat have nothing to do with actual humanitarian charities. There are hundreds of 591c charities that disguised as humanitarian or other needs, and are actually political org in “Sheep’s Clothing” .
If all the money promised to the poor, the veterans, the mentally ill, the Americans tgat are in need, Tax payers would be happier where their money is going, AND it would be more transparent and less costly.

Wendy, I have so many times thought the same thing. I'm not saying "don't help". But, the wasted $ given to politicians for senseless projects to keep their jobs continues. Our Vets, education system, and this out of control medical system are always on the back burner.

So why does the US spend this much more on this war than the EU that has a similar GDP? This is Europe's front door. Its pretty annoying to watch them sit back and coast on their own defense so the US taxpayer can pick up the tab.

The United States owes around 31 Trillion dollars. In 2021 total revenue was 4.1 Trillion. So we owe around 8 years worth of revenue. Can we really afford to give away money and spend like there is no tomorrow.

A phone call in June being reported about on the last day of October. I'd say there's an underlying intent in the article that has everything to do with Election day and nothing to do with the substance in the article. The media influence....

Where is the help from the rest of the world? The US cannot afford to fight a never ending war. When we have under employed, over qualified Americans making minimum wage or under $20/hr. No employment to support a family. We still have veterans fighting for the benefits they were promised. ...See more

Nice to see our Government has an extra $1 billion for another country when I can either buy meds or food. And they only want $40 billion to $60 billion more, oh they'll get it, we can just borrow more from China, and they argue over what causes inflation go figure.

Some people are losing there jobs, cost of living has out paced income, healthcare has increased, economy is faltering while we continue to police the world. Enough is enough. Putin is not going to stop. It is time for Russia to get a taste of it's own medicine.

The formula for defeating the U.S. militarily is no secret. Draw the conflict out until the American voters grow weary of the cost. A consideration we should make before jumping into war.

Why is the USA paying double what the EU is paying? Their combined economy is bigger than ours, and additionally Russia is a larger threat to them .

I wish presidents of BOTH political parties would worry more about helping the people in the US and less about other countries. Once we've taken care of our own then worry about other countries.

it would be helpful to know how much the other NATO countries are contributing to Ukraine
