COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA: Authorities arrested a 23-year-old man on Thursday, August 11, after he allegedly lay a vicious beating on a five-month-old Goldendoodle, leading to the dog's death.
Robert William Garon is facing a charge of cruelty to animals as authorities say this is the second dog to die in his care in a span of five months. A judge set bail for the suspect at $150,000 during a first appearance hearing on Friday afternoon, August 12. Garon was also ordered not to have any pets or contact witnesses. Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said it was one of the worst cases of animal abuse they had seen. "This is one of the worst cases of animal abuse we’ve seen," the sheriff said in a statement. "No animal should ever have to suffer such a death."

“This dog’s death was caused by non-accidental blunt force trauma to the head and body,” a prosecutor said during the Friday hearing. “Physical examination of the external and internal anatomy revealed multiple purposeful blunt force trauma injury to the abdomen, lumbar region and head.” The dog, named Buzz Lightyear, was taken to the Emergency Pet Hospital on July 29 by Garon and his girlfriend, per an arrest report from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. "The puppy was wet, disoriented, and unable to breathe normally. The dog was unable to stand or pick its head up. A veterinarian examination revealed possible head trauma, bruising to the right ear and mouth, and muscle damage throughout the body," the department said, adding that Garon and his girlfriend couldn't provide an explanation to hospital officials about what led to the pup's injuries.
Nonetheless, an examination found that the pooch had bruising to the right ear and the mouth. Meanwhile, x-rays revealed contusions to the lung. Hospital staff later called the authorities to report the dog's injury and death, saying it may have died of a “possible brain bleed.” The sheriff's report states that Garon's "torment killed the canine." Two witnesses, who did not want to be identified, told the police that Garon was intoxicated when he locked himself in a room and assaulted the dog. They said they heard the poor canine “yelping and crying out in pain and heard the suspect beating the canine to death." The witnesses noted that the door was locked and they couldn't enter the room, but the beating continued for several minutes until the dog's cries stopped.

The suspect's girlfriend, who also wasn't identified, told the authorities she believes Garon indeed killed the dog. She said she grew concerned after arriving home and finding the pooch near death. During interrogation, Garon denied allegations of animal abuse or having a substance abuse problem, which witnesses said he had. He is currently remanded in custody at the Collier County Jail. The sheriff's office was assisted by the Collier County Domestic Animal Services and Humane Society of Naples in its investigation, Fox News reported.
