Victims furious after police release nearly 870 sex offenders after they say 'sorry'

UNITED KINGDOM (TND) — Police in the United Kingdom are releasing sex offenders if they say they are "sorry."
Almost 870 cases, including five child rape cases, have been dealt with by what police in England are calling “community resolution,” according to Mirror.
Victims are furious that sex offenders can escape punishment and a criminal record by apologizing and admitting their guilt. While victims are asked for their opinion, those opinions are not "definitive."
According to Mirror, police forces are only supposed to use community resolution when it comes to low-level crimes like shoplifting but as this policy differs from county to county, police have instead used this policy to settle cases involving rape, flashing and child grooming cases.
“There is no justice for victims and no protection for the public in letting offenders off if they say sorry,” Fiona Mackenzie of campaign group We Can’t Consent To This told Mirror. ”So-called ‘minor’ sexual offenses can be a path for offenders who go on to commit more and more serious crimes.”
“It is an absolute disgrace that under this government horrific crimes are going without punishment,” Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper added.
Since 2020, seven rape cases, including five involving children, and 414 sexual assaults were dealt with by community resolution, according to Mirror.

“What kind of message is this to be sending out?" said Sammy Woodhouse, an exploitation survivor. "It’s suggesting to sex offenders there will be no real consequences for their actions. It’s giving them a free pass.”
