Mr. Gorithm on Facebook sent me a Union meme about a reasonable future where every worker is guaranteed these things:
A living wage: Whatever the hell that means
4 Weeks of Vacation (Mandatory Minimum)
Full Time = 30 Hour work week
Year Long Paid Parental Leave
Unlimited Paid Sick/Disability Leave
Executive to Worker Compensation Balance

A living wage: Whatever the hell that means
Since it's not defined, it's not worth discussing
4 Weeks of Vacation (Mandatory Minimum)
A lot of countries have this and the workers are happier and more productive
Full Time = 30 Hour work week
Same as above... maybe 32 hours though
Year Long Paid Parental Leave
That's a bit much but if that's a total to be split between both parents/caregivers...
Unlimited Paid Sick/Disability Leave
No. There needs to be a minimum and then a threshold where you need to dip into FMLA territory.
Executive to Worker Compensation Balance
Since this isn't defined, it's not worth discussing.

The Executive to Worker Compensation seemed like the only somewhat reasonable request at this point. imo

Depends on the "balance"
Guaranteed vacation is actually the most important in my mind.

2 thoughts on that.......... and I'm just going off of what has been and I've worked with/around........
1. Most people now already get 104 out of 365 days off just by working in a Monday thru Friday kinda job. Toss in a week or two for many as an existing perk.
2. It's been years since it was suggested, but I'm not sure WHY we haven't shifted our schooling schedule to better reflect the actual working world? 3 months off every Summer? With more people than ever relying on Daycare? Seems like becoming an adult is an introduction to suckiness right as you enter the real working world.

1. You make it sound like people should be thankful for getting weekends off. Ooh. A week's vacation! Some perk!
2. Yeah. Wouldn't it be nice if parents had enough vacation time to spend with their families?
Are you ready to pay the extra taxes to pay for those three months?
Do you want to deny older students from getting work experience?
Just because your life sucked doesn't mean you have to make everyone else' life suck, Abs.

1. Compared to recent history.......where people had to work every day to survive? Pretty cushy existence.
104 days is more than 1 week. I've known people who acquire more vacation time as they work for their employer longer and longer. but it still usually maxes out.
2. So the childless should keep working, if not harder, while the breeders get 3 months off?
Why didn't you even consider the idea of spreading that 3 months out over the rest of the year? as in an extended vacation over the Winter holidays, a smaller one during Summer and the rest split between Fall and Spring.
Since the laws are already very restrictive on school aged children working, I can't see how work experience would suffer.
You had a lot of skiing trips to the Alps while growing up, didja? Summered in the Hamptons?

Yes. 104 days is more than a week. But since they only come two days together (hopefully) at a time, it makes it hard to travel more than a few hundred miles away or to do anything actually relaxing once you get there. Pretty soon you'll be telling us how you had to walk 20 miles to school... uphill... both ways. Wait! Is now the time when you tell us how lazy people are because they spend a third of their life sleeping instead of working?
2a. What are you babbling about? How did 4 weeks become 3 months?
2b. I would hope that people could use their 4 weeks whenever they wanted... with notice and the agreement of their employer.
2c. You can't seem to see anything that doesn't match your own experience.
3. No. We were poor. It was either up to New Hampshire (Lake Winnipesaukee sometimes) for a week or (more often than not) down to New Jersey to stay with aunts, uncles, and cousins. They weren't extravagant vacations, but it was a time for all four of us to be together for more than a few hours at a time with no chores to do.
Again, I'm sorry that your life sucked but that's no reason for everyone else' life to suck too.

1. Well, 80 at least
2a. Summer vacation in relation to schools in the US. I've thought we should switch to a trimester or 4 quarters system for awhile now.
2b. Once you've earned or acquired vacation, it should be of your choosing when you use it.
2c. You can't seem to get away from the notion that things are impossible........despite my experiences telling me that they're really not.
3. That's how I recalled you mentioning your upbringing. A struggle. And that's nice that you had regular family time. Planning and stability are important, especially to children.

Yeah. It turns us into rational, understanding human beings.
