Storyline
This show focuses on Queen Elizabeth II as a young newlywed faced with leading the world's most famous monarchy, while forging a relationship with legendary Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill. The British Empire is in decline, the political world is in disarray, but a new era is dawning. Peter Morgan's masterfully researched scripts reveal the Queen's private journey behind the public façade with daring frankness. Prepare to see into the coveted world of power and privilege behind the locked doors of Westminster and Buckingham Palace.
=====================================
Without ruining much for anyone....... I will say this........it was a bit odd and disconcerting to have the timeline jump ahead and this series CHANGE actors for the lead characters. They're all pretty good actors, no doubt, but my brain had trouble adapting to these new faces when a bit of grey hair and wrinkle make up on the first actor would have sufficed.
I will add that everyone's favorite actress, Gillian Anderson, plays Margaret Thatcher. She does a great job, but the voice seemed a bit overdone with the raspy airy quality to it.
It did give some insight into all of the background and turmoil in the family. Leaves you feeling some compassion for Elizabeth......and I think a bit more scorn for Lady Di.

I haven't seen it yet, but it's on "The List."
TBH, the more you learn about Diana, the more a rational person starts to hate her.
Actually, there's a rant by Blair in the movie, "The Queen" that sums it up nicely:
"You know, when you get it wrong, you really get it wrong! That woman has given her whole life in service to her people. Fifty years doing a job SHE never wanted! A job she watched kill her father. She's executed it with honor, dignity, and, as far as I can tell, without a single blemish, and now we're all baying for her blood! All because she's struggling to lead the world in mourning for someone who... who threw everything she offered back in her face. And who, for the last few years, seemed committed 24/7 to destroying everything she holds most dear! "

The series actually wrapped up just as Charles and Di are about ready to split..........and you discover the shy, demure innocent princess has been stepping out with many men. Not that Charles was a great husband or wasn't for some insane reason infatuated with Camilla.......but jesus, lady.......you signed up for the role of future queen of England.
I never really quite got all the Royal adoration.......and especially Di with all of the celebs and gays. It was like Marilyn Monroe was born again or something.
THAT part is also made very clear.......Elizabeth really did not want that job and suffered thru it all this time trying to uphold the standards she was taught were necessary. Her own sister even throws shade her way in many petulant ways.
It is interesting to see the early days with all of the men in Govt and the way they treat her, too.

That was completely weird. I had visions of JFK wrapping people in plastic.
And who was his dialogue coach? Obviously someone who never listened to a JFK speech or even got within a few hundred miles of Beantown for that matter. And don't get me started on the hair.
Season 3 is cued up and ready to go. I'll get started on that after the daily chores are done.

yeah, it was distracting as all heck. I thought the same "Awwww, Dexter.......you're not gonna bother doing the weird Kennedy accent?"
I saw him not too long ago in a British series and he tried to maintain their sound

1. Trust me. He didn't do the accent. Not even close.
2. Based on his performance as JFK, I'm going to guess that went over about as well as a fart in a lead balloon.... Time to listen to Plant and Page....

Just started Season 3 and already seeing some interesting casting choices: Foul-mouthed PC Doris Thatcher from Hot Fuzz as the queen? Edmure the idiot from GoT as Prince Philip? Clancy Brown as LBJ? Helena Bonham-Carter is a joy but she doesn't look muck like Princess Margaret. At least the first actress looked a little bit like her...
Just 1.5 episodes in and I hope I can continue without laughing at the casting choices. However, I shouldn't be so surprised at seeing GoT actors as we already had Stannis the painter.... I wonder who's going to show up next... Dinklage as baby Prince Edward?

Well... more GoT actors as expected. Casterlyrock and The Vale are in the room....

THAT was pretty strange casting I thought, as well.
And Helena does not look at all like Margaret.
Though, the casting of Vanessa Kirby seemed like an upgrade on the real life princess, imo At least as a brunette.....she grew on me quickly.
Alex Jennings as the Duke of Windsor at the bottom of this page/comparison seemed about the most accurate.

Lizzie and Margaret weren't exactly stunners in their youth but you probably wouldn't have kicked them out of bed for eating crackers either.
Kirby is an upgrade to most women.
Jennings played Charles in "The Queen" and I always thought that was odd casting, looks-wise, but - you're right - quite on point for the DoW
I like the kid playing 20-something Charles. I remember him from "Peaky Blinders" (another group of cast-mates to be on the lookout though several of them were in GoT as well).
Body-positive Camilla? No. That ain't working
Edmure as Philip is working though. I was a bit put off at first but he's growing on me, as is PC Doris Thatcher as Lizzie.
I still have one or two more episodes to go in Season 3....

Oh fuck me!
This episode has a trigger warning about eating disorders.
That's as bad as the trigger warnings about smoking:
Dear viewer, this episode includes scenes of people doing something that you see people doing almost every day.
WTF!?!

She is a bit more raspy than Maggie, but not that much. Probably a byproduct of having to lower her voice so much and imitate Maggie's "breathy" sound.
I see that the chick playing Diana got an Emmy for her performance and - while she's not a bad actress - I wonder if she got the award for her acting or based solely on who she was portraying.
Diana is, of course, one of those sacrosanct personalities that can never be bad-mouthed in any way, shape, or form. Not giving an award to an actress portraying her might have been seen by some as a slight against her memory.
That said, the writers certainly did give us a hint that Diana wasn't all unicorns and rainbows... even before she got married.

We can totally see how that could have happened very easily.
I never really had an opinion on her before this series. I was always under the impression before that she was just some poor girl who had married into the Blue Bloods and became very unhappy about it. This series made me think that she actively participated in her own unhappy existence.
Agreed.

Yup. She was very much involved in the creation of her problems and loved being able to scapegoat an entire (and not always well-loved) institution for them.
You can't start a fire in your own house then blame the builders for making the house out of wood after you get burned.
