Kentucky Sens. Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul voted against legislation that a majority of the U.S. Senate passed Tuesday to enshrine specific protections for same-sex and interracial marriages in federal law.

Both of those unions already are legal nationwide. Still, the Respect for Marriage Act gained enough bipartisan support to clear the Senate amid fears that the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn a 2015 ruling that legalized same-sex marriages, much like the court eliminated a nationwide right to abortion this year. (As with same-sex marriage, the Supreme Court effectively legalized interracial marriage across America in a landmark 1967 ruling.)

The legislation would repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act that federally defined marriage as only happening between one man and one woman. It also would make states recognize all marriages that were legal where they were performed (such as unions forged in a different state), and it would protect interracial marriages by essentially requiring states to recognize legal marriages regardless of “sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin."

On Tuesday evening, the Senate passed the proposal in a 61-36 vote, with a dozen Republicans joining the chamber's Democrats to vote for it. The Democrat-led U.S. House of Representatives is expected to soon give the bill the final approval it needs before President Joe Biden can sign it into law.

The House already passed an earlier version of the Respect for Marriage Act in another bipartisan vote this summer after Republican-appointed Supreme Court justices struck down Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that permitted abortion. That ruling, and Justice Clarence Thomas' suggestion that the court "reconsider" other rights it previously established, fueled speculation that marriage equality could be nixed eventually, too.

The version of the bill the Senate passed Tuesday includes provisions meant to address some conservatives' concerns about religious liberty.

It ensures individuals and groups wouldn't be legally required to provide services for a wedding ceremony or celebration if it's against their religious beliefs, and it also declines to federally recognize polygamous marriages.

Republicans can block, and have blocked, major bills supported by Democrats by denying those proposals enough votes to clear the filibuster, which is the 60-vote threshold senators must meet to go ahead with most legislation. However, this latest measure on marriage equality got enough bipartisan backing to clear that often-fatal hurdle.

It didn't move forward with the support of McConnell or Paul, though. Both Kentucky Republicans voted against advancing the Respect for Marriage Act in an important procedural vote earlier in November and again this week.

Clarence Thomas said the Supreme Court should look at the decision that made same sex marriage legal after they overturned Roe V Wade.

That includes interracial marriage. They were passed on the same piece of law.

It didn't move forward with the support of McConnell or Paul, though. Both Kentucky Republicans voted against advancing the Respect for Marriage Act in an important procedural vote earlier in November and again this week.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a plan on Tuesday to involuntarily remove homeless people with mental illnesses from the streets and subways and force them to receive a psychiatric evaluation.

At a news conference on Tuesday, Adams said the city has a “moral obligation” to help all homeless people with mental illnesses get treatment and care. The plan authorizes police officers to involuntarily hospitalize homeless people who appear to be mentally ill or pose a threat to themselves or others. Involuntary hospitalization is required even if the homeless person doesn’t appear to pose an imminent threat to the public.

“The very nature of their illness keeps them from realizing they need intervention and support. Without that intervention, they remain lost and isolated from society, tormented by delusions and disordered thinking,” Adams said.

Adams said the plan would address a “crisis we see all around us.”

According to the Coalition for the Homeless, the unhoused population in New York City in recent years has reached its highest levels since the Great Depression, with a near-record 20,764 single adults sleeping in shelters each night in September 2022. The National Alliance on Mental Health found that 20.8% of homeless people in the U.S. have a serious mental illness.

A surge of attacks on New York City streets and subways has raised alarm in recent years, with many of the assaults involving homeless people. Last month, Adams laid blame for the attacks on mental illnesses. Adams and other elected officials have been pushed to take action on issues surrounding homelessness and mental health.

“As a city, this work — at the intersection of public safety and mental illness — represents part of the larger strategy, which is centered on providing everyone living with serious mental illness the basic building blocks of recovery: Health care, a home, and a community,” the city’s health commissioner, Ashwin Vasan, said in a tweet in support of Adams’ efforts.

But the plan to involuntarily remove and hospitalize homeless people raised some concerns and criticism. Maria Town, the president and CEO of the American Association of People With Disabilities, said in a tweet that the plan is a violation of rights and aims to make homeless people less visible rather than improve their outcome.

New York City Council member Tiffany Cabán also said in a tweet that the plan is “deeply problematic” and that deadly situations are often created by the wrong responder and response rather than the mental health crisis itself.

No, merh.........but this does bring up the discussion of Govt power and it's ability to just start grabbing people, no? Wasn't THAT part of the reason so many mental health places got shut down all those years ago? Because people complained about the abuses?

No, we let children live in some pretty horrible circumstances, though.

That describes plenty of adults these days.

I enjoy them? Or I just use those stories to criticize any effort to herd the masses into a world where they're forced to use only public transport?

There's a racket either way.......with 'helpers' of the homeless.........or ever more Govt agencies.

Society has to make certain things unpopular such as persecution of groups/classes of people.

Say ZZ doesn't like Jews, but is intelligent enough to not say it out loud because doing so is not popular. Then the President/former president says & does things that make it seem OK. Suddenly it's safety in numbers. ZZ is no longer the holder of a negative opinion of a group, allowing ZZ to voice negative comments about Jews, including causing them harm. 

We saw where that led in the past.
We saw what it does with all groups of persecuted people. 

It's like Tom Metzger publishing his hate of minorities in his various publications led to the death of  Mr. Seraw at the hands of those ignorant kids who lacked the safety thought process not to kill minorities they saw as less than human.

Because that's the point.
Diminish the group to subhuman like the propaganda posters from WWII portraying Japanese with buck teeth & coke bottle glasses. Not like us so OK to kill.

I've posted the article enough.

The institutions were bad in many ways. 
Nothing proper screening of employees wouldn't clean up. Look at the image of cops beating up jail inmates. We had that Rambo Squad here in the 80s under Sheriff Duffy.

But rather than clean up the institutions & hire screened staff instead of just anyone, the idea grew to create block grants so the mentally ill could remain in their own familiar neighborhoods with friends & family.

Problem is block grant money dries up with future politicians. 
Problem is family can't deal with their mentally ill family member. I saw it with my mother-in-law & Steve. She regularly went to the Bay Area to visit her kids up there, but if Steve was staying with one of them, she avoided visiting that family member.

I spoke with SO MANY family of my clients. They had no contact with the person because they COULD NOT cope with the mental illness. The experts who pushed for it in the 60s & 70s recognized their rosey outlook didn't work in the real world. Parents & siblings did not have the training to control those patients.

We tried. Hubby invited Steve down here. Get him out of his old stomping grounds. The doctor at UCSD said he wouldn't last. These patients crave familiar so while our intent was good, Steve would return to the bay area. Which he did. And he killed himself within a year because he reached his end. His kids were in foster care but the foster parents if the boy wanted to adopt him so the social worker didn't give him picture of them as was done in prior years. He had a court appearance which he skipped & he jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge a week or so later.

It's not a life.
They need to be in a safe place where they are not at risk.
It's a game.

The patient is stabilized in the hospital BECAUSE they are taking their meds, so they are released & stop taking the meds because they are feeling OK so they don't need them. Hell, I have heard family, my mother-in-law included, say the person doesn't need it. Off meds, the patient reverts to problematic behavior so needs to be hospitalized...

Rinse, repeat until the patient dies.

Well, I remember a president saying certain "people cling to their Bibles and guns".......getting totally defended by the MSM. Seems to me people who swear to uphold the Constitution should honor something as basic as gun rights and religious beliefs.

You're completely ignoring that the new groups of 'persecuted' are being targeted by the old groups.

But it's not like the writings of Karl Marx has led to anyones' slaughter, huh?

I have seen the EXACT same approach and tactics used toward MAGA types. And the Tea Party before them.

What you're also ignoring is simply letting people speak. THEN you can decide whether or not you agree with them, whether you wanna associate with them and whether or not you'll vote for them. But shutting them out and refusing to let them speak? Especially after it's been shown how the Spin Machine of media works these days?

In letters to the commission, most said speaking publicly about their operations, maintenance and inventory levels would force them to divulge trade secrets. PBF Energy, however, added that “the politicization of this issue by Governor Newsom, heightened by the misleading information he released and commented on related to our (2022 3rd quarter) earnings, precludes us from participating in this hearing.” According to PBF Energy’s Q3 financial report, the company’s profit jumped from $59.1 million last year to $1.06 billion this year — an increase of nearly 1700%.

Newsom called the reasoning by oil companies “pathetic” and vowed to “hold these companies accountable.” “Every Californian deserves to know why we were being fleeced at the pump even as gas prices declined across the country and crude oil prices were going down,” Newsom said in a statement. “The oil industry had their chance today to explain why they made record profits at our expense but they chose to stonewall us.”

A special session to debate the merits of a windfall profits tax, which Newsom called for this fall, will begin on Monday. Inquires into the state’s high gas prices date back decades but an unprecedented gap between the average price of gasoline in the Golden State and the rest of the country earlier this year renewed calls for answers. At the peak of this year’s gasoline price spikes, Californians were paying $2.60 per gallon more than the national average — a margin never seen before. Since then, California’s average price of gasoline has steadily slid, with prices on Tuesday dropping below $5 per gallon for the first time since the spring.

Woman speaks after witnessing attack during flight

HOUSTON – A woman who the FBI said forced a Southwest Airlines plane from Houston to Columbus, Ohio, to make an emergency landing in Little Rock, Arkansas on Saturday said in midflight that “Jesus told her to open the plane door,” court documents released Monday said.

Documents released by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas say the 34-year-old walked to the back of the plane where she “stared” at the exit door.

Court documents sketch this scene: A flight attendant then told the woman to either use the bathroom or sit down. Another flight attendant said the female passenger asked two flight attendants if she could look out the window, and when she received a negative response from the flight attendant, she forced her way past the flight attendant and began to pull the handle of the exit door in an attempt to open the door at 37,000 feet, records show.

A passenger who overheard someone say “she’s trying to open the door,” went to the rear of the plane and helped detain the woman, wrestling her to the ground, but not before she bit the passenger on the thigh -- and apparently held on. Documents said the woman continued to bite the victim until the victim “worked their fingers up to (her) jawline in an attempt to have (her) release the bite, which she eventually did.”

Documents said that’s when the woman began hitting her head on the plane floor and then later said, “Jesus told her to fly to Ohio and Jesus told her to open the plane door.”

The victim who was bitten received treatment -- antibiotics and hepatitis shots -- at a local hospital. Documents said the victim has had PTSD and anxiety since the incident. Court documents did not identify the victim but said that person had to call a veterans’ crisis hotline following the incident.

The woman accused told authorities she planned to go to Maryland to stay with a family friend who was a pastor. Documents said she left her home on Saturday without telling her husband and did not bring any luggage and was traveling alone. She “had not flown in “a long time” and could not recall the last time she had flown. Documents say she claimed she could not breathe on the plane and decided to get up from her seat. She said she remembered trying to open the door and bit the person. She also said she has anxiety and “became very anxious and normally would not have done those things.”

The criminal complaint indicates the woman is facing charges of assault within maritime and territorial jurisdiction and interference with flight crew members and attendants.
